[MUSIC] music video for SAMPHA (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano by Jamie-James Medina



Willis Earl Beal was the first music act to sign on Jamie-James Medina’s label Hot Charity in 2012.
Before that JJM was renowned for his photos of The xx on tour in 2010, Lady Gaga in India as well as shooting videos for a collaboration between Jamie xx & Gil Scott-Heron, and King Krule.

Right now, the London and The Bronx photographer is responsible for a new Sampha’s music video whose debut album Process is released 3 February on Young Turks.

Title track is (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano starring Sampha alongside model and activist Adwoa Aboah – comes in two different formats. As well as a traditional music video, viewers can also immerse themselves in a virtual reality version.

“At once both emotionally raw and achingly beautiful, ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’ is a tribute to the piano that sat in Sampha’s south London family home from the age of three – a piano on which he wrote much of his highly anticipated forthcoming debut album Process. Produced by Sampha and Rodaidh McDonald, Process (released 3rd February on Young Turks) is set to be Sampha’s defining artist statement. As one of the UK’s most enigmatic young artists, Sampha previously lent his vocal, production and songwriting talents to a whole range of standout releases, from homegrown UK contemporaries such as SBTRKT, FKA twigs, Lil Silva and Jessie Ware to world-renowned superstars like Drake, Beyonce, Kanye West, Frank Ocean and most recently on Solange’s A Seat At The Table album. Now, on Process – which also features previous singles ‘Timmy’s Prayer’ and ‘Blood On Me’ – it’s time for Sampha to tell his own story.

Meanwhile, Sampha will perform live throughout 2017, with shows across Europe, North America and Australia. These dates will include two hometown shows at London’s legendary 2,500 capacity Roundhouse venue on 29th (sold out) and 30th March before Sampha joins The xx as support on their north American tour through April and May. The tour that has redefined the Sigur Rós live experience is coming to Europe this autumn. Debuted across the U.S last year, ‘An Evening with Sigur Rós’ sees the group perform as a tight knit three-piece, with live production designed by the team behind their previous Knights of Illumination award-winning tours. This will be the only chance to catch the band in such intimate theatre and concert halls across the continent for the foreseeable future.


The month-long run will be the first time the band have toured Europe without a support act, offering instead an extended evening of two sets separated by an intermission.

Pulling from their extensive back catalogue, the now three-piece will play many of their best-loved songs, as well as new and unreleased material, currently being written towards a forthcoming eighth studio album.

[MUSIC... journalism] sexism, misogyny, sexual harassment, misinformation

I always wanted to watch Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin... I hired it a few days ago from my local Dalston library. Of course for Tilda Swinton – what’s not to like about her, Derek Jarman’s muse, and Jim Jarmusch’s too and so many others... Most importantly for Lynne Ramsay! 1999. Ratcatcher. I’m blown. That line – by heart or memory – “Your mother only wears knickers to warm her ankles up”. 2002. Morvern Callar with Samantha Morton... Morton in 1997 in the so intense Carine Adler’s Under The Skin... soon after Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting... all blowing my cells... Ramsay does human study on conditions humaines with a scalpel! Thick and screaming like Francis Bacon, angular and atrophied like Egon Schiele... sharp thumbs and end finished like Alberto Giacometti.
I’m just trying to escape from what I want / need to write. I’m gazing, almost. A few minutes into We Need To Talk About Kevin and it’s already so perfect... tension wise, storytelling wise: there is Spanish tomato, blood, red paint! Ezra Miller seems the right choice for his saturnian role...

Seagulls are like vultures today above the Lee River... from my rainy window! Are there seagulls in Paris? It never fails, each time there is rain on my window I think of Chris Rea’s Josephine. How many times, as late teenagers, mini adults did we drive in an Alpha Romeo or on a motorbike by Claude Monet Museum listening to him loudly? Countless time. Him, the Giverny lover, but that 10km road somewhere in Normandy was also great for Chris Issak’s second album as well as a Roxy Music compilation, but yeah I am drifting away...

Yesterday, he wrote and “asked” “En compagnie de Lamb, le retour minimal et funky de Missy Elliott, avec un clip chelou : revival ou ringardos ?(In Lamb’s company, Missy Elliott’s minimal and funky return, with a weird video: revival or old fashion?).





He says Louise (Lou) Rhodes started as a photographer for Les Inrockuptibles. Lou, half of Lamb but not the Lamb of Missy Elliott. It’s all confusing, but that’s what he's good at: confusing people, playing mind games!

Is he talking about that woman who came one day with a portfolio? I remember her because no women had come before to be a photographer for Les Inrocks (not when I worked for them anyway). She spoke only English and had a deep décolleté. I think she was young and her face was singular, particular, pretty in a different way. I got her to wait in the “waiting room” and dared ask to see her photos. She was very willing. All I remember are her B&W pictures of men on walls (I had been an Au-Pair the year before and got “traumatised” by Humpty Dumpty). Then, the whole editorial team came in and I left. When she left, Emmanuel Tellier said her pics were not that great but she had beautiful small breasts... the team, the lads laughed. It must have been summer or spring because I remember light clothing around.

This morning, I looked in the summer issue nº 30 with Leonard Cohen, she is not in there but her name features once in nº 31 (Jean-Louis Murat – Sept-Oct 1991) and once again in nº 32 (Leos Carax – Nov-Dec 1991). Twice in “popus” written by... Emmanuel Tellier (the very one who sexually harassed me while working for the magazine)!
Nº 34 (Ian McCulloch's cover), Louise Rhodes is cited as a photographer... interviews of bands from Manchester, Liverpool (Ian McC, James etc.), not a single picture of her! A ghost female photographer... like other female writers credited but not featured (Odile Horion or Anne Ducrocq)... Nº 40: credited but no photos of her!

So, the ugly, dirty and bad wants to prove that Les Inrocks were not sexists, misogynists and sexual harassers? Fine... But why does he spend his energy proving anything if I’m all wrong and inventing stories... blocking me on Twitter/FB, preventing me from working in the media?

Thing is... I never said anything about it prior to 2015. If they were those so called feminists, as they pretend to be, they would know that psychologically, we, women, don’t talk, don’t know how to react, don’t act, don’t realise what’s happening to us... until... so...
In prevention, they act/react in fright! They discredit us...


... Last year, I met 22 years old Anna B.M (ex la Cinémathèque worker). The number of things she says I recorded, the number of things she does... approved by Les Inrocks (JB Morain, Christophe Conte, Pierre Siankowski, Davis Doucet, Jean Jacky Goldberg, Bruno Deruisseau, etc)... on Commercial Street, she goes “You should do something else” (did I really ask for an advice from a 22 y.o?); when challenged on email about that “subliminal” sentence, she goes “You are blacklisted in the media”... when challenged about what she means exactly... she goes silent! Anna needs love, work and money! Don’t rely on her to make a revolution... she is as capitalist as Les Inrocks... using people as she goes along, just like Les Inrocks can’t care less about Sadiq Khan (14% readable before [and after] his election, as a non white portrait – article written 3 May 2016, pre-election, edited 6 May to say on intro he became mayor – super class... two articles in one) Why bother on a labour mayor or/and why bother with a non white (and Muslim)? They will need him if they try to colonise London again... So, they “praise” him in their cheap and indigestible blog Les Frères James!

So, that French music “critic” that lives in Brighton (the one with a mission that keeps reading my blog but denies it)... what’s his excuse to mention Gavin Grindon on “Kept Left” paragraph – Aug 2015 (Grindon is no specialist on homelessness...) when I mentioned Grindon twice before in July 2014 and December 2014! Banksy had many artists’ guests... why not mention them all? 

What’s his excuse when I mention Le Tour de France in a Shoegazing piece on Les Inrocks Festival in Perfide Albion (July 2014) and then he goes... via Laure Narlian by “complete chance” Le Tour de France in Nov 2014... on Les Inrocks Festival in la Perfide Albion!

What’s his real excuse when I’m the one talking about the band Algiers in 2013, and then he goes wild about them a year later... emailing me that their record company told him about them, but then again he thinks they are English... when they are not! Emailing me he has no memory (of me working for Les Inrocks) in general and he also suffers from prosopagnosia (strangely enough I suffer from it too) and yet he remembers Algiers’ manager from... 30 years ago... Algiers, a band he discovered by chance on their website!

A music critic that spies on a female style journalist to the point he knows she lives with her parents in the “dirt”... How could he possibly know that? He is sick to the bone! That same guy who built me a desk in a corridor near the toilets to isolate me, who nazi saluted me in the morning because my dad had been in the army, who just gossips / misinforms his followers... dirty journalism! Creepy creature!

[BARBERSHOPS] CUT Festival 2017 - The Art of Barbering - Friday 24 February to Sunday 5 March 2017

I have two vivid memories of the cut. I mean shaving, barb trimming, hair cutting. The earliest one is of my German speaking grandfather when he would get up early and squat the kitchen that also served as a bathroom. He shaved for hours, though he was hairless. In the very small possibility that he could have a resisting hair, he would super shave, so the little princess I was to him wouldn’t damage her fragile skin when he would kiss me guten morgen. My grandmother would get annoy as the kitchen was minuscule and both of them were quite large earthlings. Breakfast would be a mix of wonderful masculine scent and sausages, charcuterie and coffee.
The second one is in Togo, West Africa. In the neighbourhood where I lived, there was a couturière who cut my dresses. Her small workshop was two doors away, a haven where women gathered and talked... men. I mean, I was eight and nine and ten and their only conversations that fascinated me were when they laughed... about men and flirted with them. Opposite her, a barbershop. A place I was not supposed to go to but at siesta time, I would follow my housekeeper and sit on the edge, listening. Not that I understood their language, but its energy of cutting fascinated me. On a regular basis, he would chase me in the street to get me back to my bedroom, pretending to give me une fessée and I’d scream to the house gate, then I would well behave again if I didn’t want to be in trouble with my parents.

A few days ago, I was invited to the launch / introduction of Cut Festival 2017 where I met Jamie Lewis Hadley and writer Inua Ellams among others.
Between Friday 24 February and Sunday 5 March, East London will be a territory of exploration celebrating barbershops with cutting edge events in arts spaces Toynbee Studios and the Archive Gallery in Haggerston.
Barbering dates back centuries. The barbershop has been a place where communities unite as well as historically healing the sick and distinguishing identities. Inspired by barbering past and present, CUT Festival 2017 brings together international artists and activists, exhibiting and working alongside barbers both traditional and otherwise.

Contributors include photographer Hick Duarte from Brazil; Brandon Tauszik from the USA exhibits his celebrated GIF studies of Oakland’s African-American barbers; also from USA, philanthropist barber Mark Bustos will brings high end grooming to those affected by homelessness in help to Crisis; London artists Cary Kwok, Oreet Ashery and Paula Harrowing will add their acclaimed drawings, film and photographs to the festival exhibition. Paula will also photograph barbershops creating a free CUT Festival publication with curator Jamie Lewis Hadley.

A day of talks, discussions and performances with barbers and artists including Oreet Ashery (2pm), Brandon Tauszik (3pm), Mark Bustosin conversation with London barber and philanthropist Joshua Coombes (5pm). Open Barbers (6pm) will engage in conversations about identity, gender and race through the medium of barbershops. Alongside these discussions is a preview of Inua Ellams’ new The Barber Shop Chronicles at 4pm (on tour and at the National Theatre in June) and throughout the day, pay-what-you-can haircuts by Open Barbers on the roof of Toynbee Studios as participants listen to new, commissioned audio work by Emma Frankland – part of Next In Line.

Other commissioned works by artists. These include Katie Baird, who will collaborate with beauty professionals to revisit the glossy look of her early 20s, Hester Chillingworth, who has a different word shaved in her hair every month for a year, Conrad Kira, who performs an audio-visual piece inspired by music heard in barbershops and Paula Harrowing, who has interviewed and photographed barbers for CUT Festival’s free newspaper.

Mark Bustos
Prolific US barber Mark Bustos will work with Crisis, as part of CUT Festival, to offer haircuts for the homeless community around East London. As the founder of the #BeAwesomeToSomebody movement, Mark has given free haircuts to the homeless every Sunday in New York City, where he lives. He also travels and works with homeless people all over the world. Documented and followed extensively on social media, Mark believes it is important to share positive energy and skills. He feels that whilst physical beauty is only skin deep, triggering the release of feel-good endorphins through the power of a haircut is priceless. Homeless or billionaire, the heightened sense of self-confidence is universal.

On 10 May 2017, Tate Modern will shelter a major Alberto Giacometti retrospective, the first in 20 years in UK.
The exhibition will focus on the celebrated sculptor, painter and draughtsman’s evolution in art from realistic to more abstract figures, noting that the artist never gave up his “still life” forms. It will reposition him as an artist showing his great interest in materials and textures otherwise than bronze, such as plaster, clay and paint.

The show will exhibit drawings and sketches never exhibited before, but also his wide fascination for African art: profiles such as “walk like an Egyptian” with frontal eye, influenced by archaeology going on at the time.

It’s going to be also about brutal sexuality and highly erotic pieces (The Nose – 1947-1949), replacing moments as lived in urban context (Walking Woman – 1932-1933; Dog – 1951) and one of the centre piece will be the reunification of all six Women of Venice for the first time in six decades: plaster works, created for the 1956 Venice Biennale.

As for me, I’ll study his work on gazing... a great state of “escape”...

I asked Sabine Longin, director of Development for the Giacometti Foundation whether she knew about that anecdote I was once told in Paris: upon getting “run over” in a Paris street, Giacometti would have said “At least, something is happening to me”. Sabine didn’t know, but thought it could be possible... adding that she was replacing her colleague because she fell in the Paris metro and broke her two feet.

[PERFORMANCE INSTALLATION] Siobhan Davies Dance: material / rearranged / to / be @ Barbican till 28 Jan 2017



World Premiere of major new work / new performance installation by Siobhan Davies Dance: the first presentation of this exciting work featuring choreographers Andrea Buckley, Siobhan Davies, Helka Kaski, Charlie Morrissey, Efrosini Protopapa, and Matthias Sperling; visual artists Jeremy Millar, Emma Smith, and design duo Glithero (Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren).

London-based investigative arts organisation Siobhan Davies Dance premiere an ambitious new installation comprised of multiple pieces by choreographers, visual artists, scientists and designers. Exploring how the body feels when in the act of doing, the installation includes live performance, film projection and objects that are presented as an ever-changing arrangement. Each of the works draws upon the library and practices of the art historian Aby Warburg, who collected diverse images of gestures from different times and places and positioned them side-by-side to reveal previously-hidden relationships. As they interrogate the fascinating relationship between mind and body the artists create new works including choreography exploring lost movements from the past, interactive structures examining the postures of an argument and a series of hanging mobiles inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s Melancholia. The works appear within a large-scale architecture, which is built-up, dismantled and rearranged, creating new pathways and drawing visitors into a journey of discovery.

In between dance and performance last night, I stopped to read some guiding boards @ The Curve.

Time: “... Simple, practical unit measured on a clock and also an incomprehensible whole containing the past, present and future of the universe...”

Image: “... an image is a visual representation of something – a person, a place, an object, even a process or a residue. Images are a primary means by which culture are represented and conveyed across time and space...”

Taxonomy: “... Michel Foucault famously drew attention to this: in The Order of Things he cites a passage from Jorge Luis Borges that lists a series of unusual categories for grouping animals in a fictitious Chinese encyclopaedia...”

Action: “... When we act, we do something to the world outside of us. Actions can be intentional and purposeful, or they can be involuntary and automatic. Either case, our body does something in response to something else, whether thought or threat. Action and perception are closely linked... thinking can itself be understood as an action even though its effects are sometimes invisible, a thought could be an action imagined but not performed...”

Becoming: “... is a philosophical idea of constant change, often understood in opposition to the fixity... thoughts since ancient Greeks as Plato and Aristotle... thinking about becoming is a more recent development, a primary concern of European philosophers since Nietzsche. The idea of becoming is crucial to dance as a discipline of movement...”
